"The Lower Keys, extending some forty miles from Big Pine to Key West, are oriented at almost right angles to the Upper Keys and are separated from each other by narrow channels that run in a northwest-southeast direction. In the Lower Keys, the islands are smaller and more numerous than those in the Upper Keys, giving rise to the collective names for the hundreds of mangrove clumps in this area, including the Content Keys, the Saddlebunch Keys, the Snipe Keys, the Mud Keys and the Sand Keys."
